ast fall, my 12-year-old son was on a hot streak — until he wasn't. Out of nowhere, every inside fastball turned into a weak roll-over to short. Two weeks of cage work didn't fix it. Tee work didn't fix it. A weighted bat sure didn't fix it. He started losing confidence, and his at-bats got shorter and shorter.
His travel coach pulled me aside after a Saturday tournament and said something I didn't expect: "It's not his bat speed. It's his hands. They're separating before contact." Then he handed me a small, lime-and-purple strap and told me to try it for 10 minutes a day for three weeks.
I'd never seen anything like it. I went home, did some digging, and what I found surprised me — this little strap has quietly become the training tool MLB cages, D1 programs, and even some sports medicine doctors keep recommending. And almost no parents in our travel circuit had heard of it.

According to data shared with us by an independent youth-baseball analytics group, an estimated 87% of hitters under 16 show some degree of hand separation during the swing. The result? Late contact, weak ground balls, swinging through fastballs they should be driving, and — over time — wrist and forearm strain from the bat torquing in the bottom hand.
Coaches have known this forever. They've also known there was no easy way to fix it. Until a few years ago, the only "solution" was a coach standing behind a hitter, holding his wrists, and watching him swing in slow motion. Useful in a private lesson. Useless during a Saturday cage session.
